  • Health:
    • Have always been physically fit
    • Contracted Stage IV Colorectal Cancer 2 days before my 65th birthday (October 2010)
    • Cancer was in my colon, rectum, pelvis, both leg bones, liver, and lymph nodes
    • Was given 6 months to live
    • Underwent 6 weeks of daily radiation and 24/7 chemo treatments to shrink the baseball size tumor in my colon
    • Chemo was administered by a pump in a fanny pack attached to my waist with a tube inserted into a surgically implanted port in my chest
    • The treatments worked. The tumor was reduced in size, but it was now blocking the colon, and unless it was removed immediately, the colon would burst allowing the waste and toxins to spill into my abdominal cavity, and I would likely be gone in 2-3 days
    • Emergency surgery was performed. 21 days in the hospital, six surgeries, 14 inches of my colon were removed
    • I wore an ileostomy (external bag attached to my abdomen to collect the waste products) for two months
    • After 6 weeks of recovery, another 4 months of daily chemo treatments (sitting in a chair at the cancer center for 4 hours a day, 5 days a week)
    • Colon cancer is pretty much in remission now. Still find occasional polyps in my colon, and recently discovered cancer on my left ribs and upper colon
    • Am taking things 3 months at a time – from PET scan to PET scan, and colonoscopy to colonoscopy
    • Just before Christmas, another PET scan, MRI, and X-Rays discovered Non-Hodgkins Follicular Lymphoma in my thoracic spine just behind my lungs and heart. I am on chemo and radiation once more
    • The doctors are totally baffled as to why someone can get three different kinds of cancer in two years
    • I go to the gym (LA Fitness) 6 days a week to keep my strength and endurance up. 5:00am for cardio and abs, and again at 2:30 for another body part weight workout
    • I have problems with my shoulders – cartilage is pretty much gone, so pressing movements are pretty restricted, so I work around it

  • Attitude, Outlook and Direction:
    • Doing well now, very positive attitude and outlook
    • Don’t worry about things I can’t control. Just focus on controlling the controllables
    • Using my time and “second chance” to help as many people as I can and be as positive a force as possible
    • I’ve had a great influence on many people encouraging them to get screened for cancer and other health issues
    • Put up a website (www.beatcolorectalcancer.org) when I first contracted cancer, with the idea of raising funds. Haven’t kept the site up. It’s just sitting there, but there are some good videos there.
    • Co-authored a book about overcoming obstacles and hardships called, “It’s Okay To Be Scared… But Never Give Up” (Amazon)
    • Am dedicating my effort to Katie Couric’s StandUp2Cancer.org. Katie lost her husband to the same disease I have at age 42, and left her with 2 children. She is very dedicated to cancer awareness and screening, and I am focused on helping as many other people avoid this insidious disease as I can.

  • Philosophy :
    • Think for yourself. Most people don’t think things through in their own minds. Just because something sounds good or that some “guru” or celebrity says a certain thing, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. Examples:
      • “You can have everything in life that you want if you just help enough people get what they want.”
      • “To be successful, find someone who has what you want and do what they do and you’ll get the same thing.”
      • “If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.”
      • “If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.”
      • “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
      • “Never give up!”
    • I’m not interested in what someone else says, I want to know what YOU know, and more importantly, what YOU have done and the results YOU have gotten or the lessons YOU have learned.
    • This is YOUR time and YOUR life. It’s not a dress rehearsal; you don’t get do-overs. Don’t waste it living someone else’s dreams.
    • You don’t get what you think about, you get what you act on… whether you’ve thought about it or not.
    • Be kind to everyone. Never judge them for what they say or do. We have no idea what another person is presently going through or has gone through in the past. Everyone comes from different experiences and backgrounds that can influence our words and actions in any given moment.
